Caregiver Services
Our caregiver services are funded by a grant from the Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging with funds from the federal Older Americans Act. Individual contributions are welcomed and help us reach more caregivers.
Caregiving isn’t always easy. You may find yourself in a new role, needing some guidance in adjusting and getting necessary support.
Through our Caregiver Services program, social workers coach and counsel
family caregivers so they have the information, skills, and emotional tools
to provide balanced, confident care for as long as possible.
Help with the Basics
If you're a caregiver and have general questions about resources for yourself or the person you're caring for, our family consultant can advise you about community resources that will meet your needs.
Caregiver Coaching and Counseling
Family caregivers meet with our family consultants to go through a guided
interview process that
covers the many aspects of caregiving. Then the
family consultant identifies issues that are of greatest concern
and encourages ways to address those issues. Examples
include involving other family members in providing care, getting training
about how to handle memory loss and other difficult situations, and learning
to take time for your own enjoyment to prevent caregiver burnout. Your
family consultant communicates with you on a periodic basis if you want
ongoing support and direction, especially as new issues arise.
Caregiver Training
When needed, our
family consultant makes arrangements for a training visit from an appropriate
health care professional. A nurse, physical therapist, or
occupational therapist can provide individual training or recommend adaptive
equipment for specific caregiving situations.
Caregiver Calendar of Events
Our comprehensive calendar lists metro-wide events for caregivers, including
free and low-cost educational forums, training opportunities, and support
groups specifically for family caregivers.
